They have 11 different flavors that come in bottles but are also available at soda fountains.

Is Maine root soda healthy? Does Main root soda have caffeine? Is Main root soda gluten free? Where is Maine root soda made? Here’s what you need to know about Main Root soda.

Is Maine root soda healthy?

Is Maine root soda healthy

Main root soda is made from organic cane sugar, so the fact that they don’t use chemicals makes it healthier than other sodas.

They contain about the same amount of sugar as other well-known sodas like Mountain Dew.

And as long as you don’t drink more than about a cup a day it’s healthy for you.

Most of their flavors have very few ingredients and only contain organic certified cane sugar, pure water, root beer,  and spices.

However, the daily recommended sugar intake is 25g to 30g per day according to NHS.uk and Harvard Medical School.

According to data provided by the US Department of Agriculture’s Research Service (USDA), Main root soda has 11g of sugar per 3.4 oz (100 mL).

Here’s a side by side comparison of the sugar content in popular sodas compared to Main root soda:

Per 3.4 oz (100 mL) Coca Cola Pepsi Dr Pepper Maine Root soda lemon lime
Calories (kcal) 280 43 42 46
Sugar (g) 77 11.6 10.6 11.27

Links to the data for each soda below are:

  • Coke
  • Pepsi
  • Dr Pepper
  • Maine Root soda lemon-lime

As you can see Maine Soda has about the same sugar content as Pepsi and Dr Pepper.

But, considerably less that Coca-Cola.

A metric cup – similar to a real cup holds 8.45 oz (250 mL).

Based on the recommended amount of sugar you should consume per day, the data shows that you shouldn’t consume more than a cup of soda per day.

So, as long as you drink under this amount and as part of a balanced diet it’s healthy to drink Maine Root soda.

In a study published in the Journal of Environmental Health, it was concluded that organic food is healthier than non-organic food for a number of reasons.

The researchers found that pesticides have a negative impact on cognitive function in children.

And that various nutrients are higher in organic food compared to non-organic food.

Does Maine Root soda have caffeine?

Almost all of Maine Root sodas flavors are caffeine free.

Maine Root soda sells 9 different flavors.

And only one of them contains caffeine which is Mexicane Cola, it’s spelled with an ‘e’.

All of the other flavors are caffeine-free.

The other maine root soda flavors they sell are:

They used to make Black Tea, and Honey Ginseng Green Tea flavors, because they talk about it in their Vendor Resources.

But they are no longer listed on their website.

They say that these flavors along with Mexicane Cola contain 30g of caffeine.

It’s possible that these can be ordered from the on special request, and may be available elsewhere.

On the label for Mexicane Cola listed on Amazon, it says that it contains 40g of caffeine per 12 oz (355 mL).

This is different to what they say on their website, where they state that Mexicane Cola has 30g of caffeine.

It’s possible that the bottle listed on Amazon, is an older bottle, and they’ve since updated their formula.

In either case, this is an extremely high amount of caffeine, however, is normal compared with other popular sodas.

Soda Caffeine content per 12 oz – 1 can (354 mL) Caffeine converted to mg
Coca Cola 34g 34000
Pepsi 35g to 38g 35000 to 38000
Mountain Dew 54g 54000
Fanta Orange 0 0
Sprite 0 0
7Up 0 0
Maine Root – Mexican Cola 40g 4000

Data provided by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Based on the recommendation of the doctors at Mayo Clinic and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the USA, the recommended daily caffeine intake is 400mg.

And 1 milligram (mg) is equal to 1000 grams.

And as you can see, sodas that do contain caffeine have WAY more than the recommended amount.

In my opinion, it’s best to stick to sodas that are caffeine free.

Maine Root Beer is a brand of craft soda that is known for its unique and natural ingredients. Unlike traditional sodas that are made with synthetic ingredients and high amounts of sugar, Maine Root Beer is made with organic and fair trade certified ingredients. Is Maine Root soda gluten-free?

Is Maine Root soda gluten free

According to the Maine Root soda official website, all of Maine Root’s sodas are gluten-free.

Healthline also says that most sodas are gluten-free.

But, there are rare exceptions.

The ingredients in Maine Root sodas are carbonated water, organic sugar cane, and spices, none of which contain gluten.

Some products can be certified gluten-free, and display this on their label.

This is usually done on sodas in fountain sodas, as most of the well-known brands don’t have it.

The website Living Allergic has said that by and large spices do not contain gluten, however, cross-contamination is possible, and some spices may have caking agents that can contain wheat.

If you have a gluten allergy I would recommend sticking with sodas that are certified gluten-free.

So far, I haven’t been able to find any sodas that are certified gluten-free.

A good idea might be to make your own craft sodas at home.

It’s very easy to do, and to be 100% sure it’s gluten free you’ll want to use a Sodastream or soda syphon to carbonate it rather than using soda water.

I wrote an article about craft sodas and how to make them which you can read by clicking [here, link: What Is Craft Soda?].
