Coke and Pepsi are the two most well-known sodas.
But, the Coca-cola company that makes Coke also makes many different sodas such as Fanta and Sprite.
So, today I will cover whether Coke owns the Pepsi brand.
The Coca-Cola Company does not own Pepsi.
PepsiCo owns the Pepsi brand.
PepsiCo owns thousands of brands, including Mountain Dew and Gatorade.
About 50% of PepsiCo’s sales are from beverages like Pepsi, whereas the other 50% is from snack foods like Dorritos.
The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo are the two largest soda companies in the USA.
Below, I will explain how PepsiCo formed and how it got ownership of the Pepsi brand, which company is more prominent – PepsiCo or Coca-Cola, which company sells the most soda, and what the most popular soda is.
What Company Is Pepsi Owned By?
Pepsi is a very well-known soda that many celebrities have endorsed over the years.
But what company is Pepsi owned by?
The number of brands that PepsiCo owns is in the thousands.
And the brands they own often change.
It’s common for PepsiCo to sell a brand to another company and negotiate a share of the profits.
I provided a complete list of PepsiCo’s brands in this article about what Pepsi owns .
PepsiCo is a beverage company that produces snacks and convenience foods like Quaker Oats.
Interestingly, Pepsi previously owned some restaurants, such as KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut.
But, PepsiCo split off this part of their business and are now separate companies.
These restaurants are now owned by a fast-food company named YUM! Brands.
But many of the top executives from PepsiCo are in critical positions within YUM! Brands and, in my opinion, are the main reason you see Pepsi sold at these restaurants rather than Coke.
Coca-Cola is not just a soda company, like PepsiCo; it also owns and makes snack foods.
But, PepsiCo owns far more snack food brands than the Coca-Cola company.
PepsiCo is one of the biggest companies out there; below is a video that goes into the ins and outs of PepsiCo and how they compare to other companies:
Who Is Bigger Pepsi or Coke?
Pepsi and Coke are available at virtually every supermarket and convenience store.
Coke and Pepsi have nearly identical tastes and are both colas.
But, here is which soda sells more, Coke or Pepsi.
Coke is bigger than Pepsi. PepsiCo sells $9.8 billion of products annually, while Coca-Cola sells $38 billion.
The Coca-Cola Company also makes up about 44% of the carbonated drink market, whereas PepsiCo makes up about 26%.
The amount of sales of Pepsi and Coke changes each year.
But, historically, Coke is more popular, and there are more sales of Coke than Pepsi.
However, the makeup of each company is quite complex.
For example, PepsiCo and the Coca-cola Company sell their beverages in restaurants.
However, typically, a restaurant such as Taco Bell or Mcdonald’s will sell either drink made by the Coca-Cola company OR drinks produced by PepsiCo.
For example, both PepsiCo products, Taco Bell, have Pepsi and Mountain Dew.
Whereas Mcdonald’s has Coke, Sprite, and Fanta, all owned and made by the Coca-Cola company.
What Is the Number 1 Selling Soda?
Many sodas are available when you walk into any supermarket, corner store, or restaurant.
The sodas that everyone is familiar with, such as Coke and Pepsi, are always for sale.
But, here is which is the most popular.
The number 1 selling soda is Coca-cola.
The entire soda market is estimated at 220 billion. Of that, the Coca-cola Company accounts for 46.3%, followed by PepsiCo with 25.6%.
Colas such as Pepsi and Coke are also the most popular sodas.
Interestingly, there is a difference between how many sodas are sold at different locations such as restaurants like Mcdonald’s and supermarkets.
Below is a table that shows what percent of soda sales are made at each one:
Where sodas are sold | What percent of all sodas are sold there |
Food Service outlets like Mcdonald’s and Taco Bell and restaurants | 33% |
Supermarkets, hypermarkets, and mass merchandisers | 26% |
Convenience stores & gas stations | 22% |
Others | 13% |
Online stores | 10% |
(source)
Surprisingly, food service outlets sell the most sodas, followed by stores like supermarkets and hypermarkets.
The reason is somewhat apparent at first glance, and that is because every meal comes with a soda, pretty much.
Whereas, if a person walks into a grocery store or hypermarket, they may not necessarily want a soda.
Are Pepsi and Coke the Same?
Coke and Pepsi are two iconic soft drinks virtually everyone has tried.
But they are both colas and have a very similar appearance and taste. However, this is whether Pepsi and Coke are the same things.
Colas are the most popular type of soda.
According to recent data, colas such as Coke and Pepsi make up approximately 50% of all soda sales.
Followed by citrus flavors and ‘other’ that make up the remaining 50%.
And account for 25% of each of the remaining sodas.
Which Is Older Pepsi or Coke?
Pepsi and Coke are market leaders in the beverage industry. Colas is a type of soda with a unique taste, unlike other fruit-flavored sodas.
Pepsi and Coke were invented around the same time, but here is what came first: Pepsi or Coke.
But modern-day Pepsi does not contain pepsin.
Pepsin is naturally produced by the body and is one of the main enzymes the body uses to break down protein.
Interestingly, when Coke and Pepsi were invented, sodas were thought of more as a medicine and were sold from soda fountains in pharmacies.
I explained this fact and other info about the history of Pepsi, when and why it was invented, and why it was called Pepsi in this article about when Pepsi was invented .
Sodas were believed to be good for digestion because the water is carbonated.
And they were advertised as being suitable for your health.
Many still find sodas such as Pepsi help with an upset stomach and nausea.
