Who Makes Old Jamaica Ginger Beer?

Who Makes Old Jamaica Ginger Beer

I came across Old Jamaica ginger beer and wondered who actually makes it.

Here’s what I found whilst doing some research.

So, who makes Old Jamaica ginger beer? Old Jamaica ginger beer is made by Refresco, which is a UK-based company.

On the label is written either Cott Beverages or Refresco- have Caramel Color.

But, Cott Beverages is now owned by Refresco, as written on their Linkedin page.

According to Wikipedia, Old Jamaica ginger beer was originally made by a Jamaica-based company Desnoes & Geddes (D&G).

Sodas such as ginger beer usually have the same ingredients which include carbonated water, natural flavors, and sweetener.

But, I wanted to know exactly what’s in Old Jamaica ginger beer, as well as how much sugar is in it.

Read, below where I explain all of this and other interesting info about ginger beers and Old Jamaica ginger beer.

Old Jamaica ginger beer has 13.2g of sugar per 3.4 oz (100 mL), as shown on the label. 3.4 oz is equivalent to about half a standard-sized cup.

It also has around 53 calories (kcal) per 3.4 oz.

Most well-known sodas have around the same amount of grams of sugar (brown sugar) and calories as Old Jamaica Ginger Beer.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the sugar content of well-known sodas so you can see how they compare to Old Jamaica ginger beer:

Per 3.4 oz (100 mL) Coca Cola Pepsi Dr. Pepper Old Jamaica ginger beer
Calories (kcal) 280 43 42 53

Links to the data provided by the US Department of Agriculture’s Research Service (USDA) are available here:

  • Coke link
  • Pepsi link
  • Dr. Pepper link

NHS.uk and Harvard Medical School have stated that the recommended daily sugar intake is 25g to 30g.

Therefore, using a bit of math means you can drink around 1 cup of sodas such as well-known brands like Coke, and Pepsi, as well as, Old Jamaica ginger beer.

Does ginger beer have more sugar than Coke?

Does ginger beer have more sugar than Coke

Old Jamaica ginger beer(delicious drink) has less sugar content than Coke.

Another well-known brand Bundaberg has a similar amount of sugar (brown sugar) to Old Jamaica ginger beer.

Coca-Cola has 77g of sugar per 3.4 oz (100 mL), and ginger beer from brands like Old Jamaica and Bundaberg has 10g of sugar per 3.4 oz.

Each individual brand of ginger beer can have a different amount of brown sugar and natural ginger mixture.

But, based on the data above it appears that most sodas have around 10g of sugar for each half cup of soda.

And therefore, it’s likely that all ginger beers have around 10g of sugar as well.

Some ginger beer brands might use cane sugar or other sweeteners like stevia, or honey which would impact how much sugar they contain.

I did a bunch of research on well-known medical websites and it appears it’s still unknown whether sugar from natural sources such as honey and fruit is the same as processed sugars like table sugar and fructose corn syrup.

Is there alcohol in Old Jamaica ginger beer

Old Jamaica fresh ginger root beer does not contain alcohol or caffeine content, as shown on its label and Jamaican ginger beer recipe. Therefore old jamaica ginger beer alcohol content is zero. So is ginger beer caffeine content.

It’s what’s referred to as a soft drink

Companies that make ginger beer and root beer differentiate their drinks that contain alcohol by labeling them as ‘hard ginger beer’, which means it contains alcohol. This is done by old jamaica ginger beer alcohol percentage.

I remember when I first heard of ginger beer and root beer I thought they contained alcohol.

Only later did I learn that almost all of them don’t.

Some alcoholic ginger beers and Ginger root beers are sold in liquor stores, and bars.

However, they’ll state on their label that they contain alcohol in them.

And you typically need to ask specifically for an alcoholic ginger beer or Ginger root beer.

Or, they will ask you which kind of ginger beer you’d like.

Does ginger beer have caffeine?

Does Old Jamaica Ginger Beer have caffeine in it

Old Jamaica ginger beer or Homemade ginger beer does not contain caffeine, as stated on the label.

Sodas like Coca-Cola have added caffeine which they have said improves the taste.

Caffeine is also known to increase alertness, and give a boost of energy.

According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the caffeine content in popular sodas is as follows:

Soda Caffeine content per 12 oz – 1 can (354 mL) Caffeine converted to mg
Coca Cola 34g 34000
Pepsi 35g to 38g 35000 to 38000
Mountain Dew 54g 54000
Fanta Orange 0 0
Sprite 0 0
7Up 0 0

Also, most of the zero and sugar-free versions of popular sodas contain the same amount of caffeine as the sugar-free versions.

The recommended daily intake of caffeine is 400mg of caffeine according to the doctors at the Mayo Clinic and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the USA. 1 milligram (mg) is equal to 1000 grams.

Therefore, sodas and alcoholic beverages that contain caffeine typically have much higher rates of caffeine than the recommended daily intake and have about 10 times the recommended daily intake per can.

So, you’ll want to look at the label of any sodas or Carbonated water you’re drinking to see how much caffeine they have, and if they do only drink a little bit.

Because you can easily go over the recommended daily caffeine intake with a calorie diet.

There are known side effects to drinking too much caffeine such as irregular heartbeat and seizures.

However, it appears that you develop a tolerance to it since so many people consume sodas that contain massive amounts of caffeine on a regular basis.
